How long have you been with INSPIRED?
I have been with INSPIRED for 2 years.
What is your current role?
Pet Nutritionist – my role focuses on developing, improving, and supporting pet food products to ensure they are nutritionally balanced, safe, and commercially viable. I am part of a small team in a highly cross-functional role, working with many areas of the business including marketing, project managers, operations, quality, process, procurement, and compliance. This ensures that both new and existing pet food products are nutritionally sound, commercially viable, and aligned with customer needs and brand strategy. Day to day, I formulate and improve pet food recipes based on marketing briefs and business needs, ensuring they meet nutritional, quality, and cost requirements. I support projects through the full development process from concept to launch, which can include reviewing packaging artwork and approving marketing and nutrition claims to ensure they are accurate and compliant with regulations. I also attend quality and raw material panels to assess ingredients and product quality and contribute to decision-making on product standards and improvements. In addition, I respond to nutritional queries from both end consumers and retailers, providing clear and accurate information on feeding guides, ingredients, and product suitability.
What attracted you to join INSPIRED?
What attracted me to join INSPIRED was the overall package and the nature of the role itself. The benefits package was appealing, particularly the pet-friendly culture that allows dogs at work, as well as the hybrid working model which supports a good work–life balance.
Most importantly, the role itself sounded exciting and aligned with my experience and interests in pets, nutrition, product development, and cross-functional collaboration. It offered the opportunity to work on innovative products within a business that felt like a great place to be part of.
How has your career developed since you started?
I have built on my previous experience as an NPD Manager and further developed my expertise in pet nutrition and product development within a more specialised technical role. I initially focused on understanding internal processes, recipe formulation, and ways of working specific to pet nutrition. Over time, I have taken on more responsibility and now work more independently on developing and improving recipes, ensuring they meet nutritional, quality, and commercial requirements.
What achievement or project are you most proud of?
Receiving a CEO Award for Operational Excellence in November 2024. This was particularly meaningful as it recognised my contribution to the business after a relatively short time in the role.
How would you describe the team and INSPIRED culture?
The team is collaborative, supportive, and very cross-functional, with a strong focus on working together across departments to deliver the best outcomes for both products and customers. Communication and teamwork are a key part of how things operate day to day, given the number of functions involved. There is a strong focus on continuous improvement across both products and processes.
There are also positive initiatives that help build engagement and inclusivity, such as the networks, charity events, and wider colleague activities, which help create a more connected and enjoyable working environment.
As a large business with multiple sites and group functions, it can sometimes be challenging to quickly identify the right person or route for certain queries, but overall there is a strong willingness across teams to support and collaborate effectively.
Overall, it’s a collaborative culture that values contribution from different teams, encourages involvement, and supports both professional development and a positive working environment.
How has INSPIRED supported your growth or development?
Internal training opportunities – Excel courses, mental health first aid, pet first aid.
My INSPIRED journey – adding in business and personal objectives which I review regularly with my line manager which provides structure for ongoing development and allows us to discuss progress, future opportunities, and areas I would like to develop further.
What do you enjoy most about working at INSPIRED?
The variety in the role and the fact that no two days are the same, which keeps it interesting and engaging. The work is very dynamic, involving different projects, teams, and challenges on a regular basis.
I also really value the culture, particularly the pet-friendly environment which allows dogs at work, as it adds a really positive and unique element to the workplace.
One of the most rewarding parts of the role is seeing products I’ve helped to develop on the shelves and knowing I’ve contributed to feeding pets across the nation. It’s really satisfying to see the end result of the work that goes into product development.
I also really enjoy being able to feed my own dog the foods I’ve helped formulate and seeing him thrive as a result. He’s always getting compliments on how well he looks and the condition of his coat, which makes it feel even more rewarding and personal.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining us?
It’s a great place to work if you enjoy a fast-paced, varied role where you’re working across different teams and getting involved in a wide range of projects. No two days are the same, so it suits someone who likes problem-solving and being adaptable.
It’s also a very collaborative environment, and you get the opportunity to work closely with lots of different functions across the business, which helps you learn quickly and understand the bigger picture.
The culture is another strong point, with things like the pet-friendly office, hybrid working, and wider initiatives to make it an enjoyable place to be.
Like any large business, it can take a bit of time to understand how everything connects and who to go to for what, but once you build those relationships, people are generally very supportive and willing to help.
Overall, I’d say it’s a great opportunity for someone who wants variety, responsibility, and the chance to develop in a cross-functional environment.
